The current property owner, Buckeye Sand and Gravel, has the capacity to mine 1 million tons of sand and gravel annually, which would equate to a surface area of 20-25 acres annually. Of the materials mined, approximately 50% is sand and the 50% is rock. This material is further processed and cleaned for use in the concrete industry. An independent concrete processor is establishing a mobile concrete plant on Buckeye Sand and Gravel’s property for the purpose of manufacturing concrete close to the source of the raw materials. The plant has the capacity to process?? tons of material annually. To date, approximately 45 acres have been mined to a depth of 15 feet, and a lake has formed as a result of the mining activities. Once mining activities have been completed, it is estimated that the lake would cover over 100 acres to a depth of 20 feet. The property owner and the Town of Buckeye are interested in developing the property into a recreational and aquatic destination. The property has the potential to house permanent structures on the north side of the lake and accommodate hiking and camping activities on the south side of the lake. The Town of Buckeye has obtained a $560,000 grant from the Arizona State Parks to complete a feasibility study for the creation of Buckeye Town Lake. This study will consider land acquisition options, boundaries of the lake, water quality issues and other pertinent topics.
