World Trade Center Relies on Concrete for Security Concerns -

Freedom Tower is the name given to 1 World Trade Center, the tallest building being built next to the September 11 memorial in Lower Manhattan, New York City. When completed in the next few years, the structure is scheduled to be the same height as the former twin towers – with the addition of a radio tower it will be 1776 feet tall. What material did designers choose to make this tower more “terror resistant” than the previous structures? Concrete, of course.

Since the building is located fairly close to a street, the entire building was raised many stories and sits on giant steel columns with 6 feet of heavily reinforced concrete surrounding the base (talk about blast protection). The central elevator and stair core is made of concrete and includes 3-foot thick walls surrounding stairs that are 50% wider than code. And much of the concrete supplied by the site was produced by NRMCA member Ferrara Bros. A September 10 article by the Carroll Gardens Patch, a Brooklyn news-focused Web site that covers the area where Ferrara Bros. operates a plant, interviewed company Vice President Joseph J. Ferrara on what the job means to him. Read more.
